Why do people participate? While my co-workers have their own reasons for buying tulips when I coordinate the annual Tulip Campaign at the office, I help the Lung Association in memory of my Dad. The Association helped him many decades ago! He voluntarily enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces in 1939 during WWII. He was originally stationed in England but ended up in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany before finally returning home in He was disabled then he contracted TB while on the troop ship returning to Canada. He was helped immensely by the Sanatorium Board of Manitoba (as it was then known) upon his arrival. The Lung Association was his charity of choice and remains near and dear to my family. — Alanna, Volunteer Manitoba When you can't breathe, nothing else matters.™
Why do people participate? On December 15, 2013, I lost a very dear friend to lung cancer. Angie was diagnosed in August 2013, and I was lucky to spend four wonderful months helping her and cherishing the times we spent together. It was a terrible time watching the disease ravage her body and eventually take her breath away. Not a day goes by that I don’t think of my wonderful friend. She loved spring and always waited for her tulips to come up in her garden. Some of those are now in my garden, and I wait for them to peek through the sun-warmed ground each spring. Tulips mean spring is around the corner, which reaffirms my belief of renewal and regrowth. Time goes on, and heals; you are able to flourish once again and regrow. — Colleen, Desjardins Financial Security Investments Inc. When you can't breathe, nothing else matters.™
