The soil was very rock and sandy. Farming was difficult. Not much flat land The growing season was short. Lots of wood to build buildings and ships Caught fish and whales from the Atlantic Ocean

Very fertile and rich soil Crops grew well Longer growing season Farming was easier Climate was good (plenty of rain and sun) Good rivers for transportation Lots of wildlife that made for good hunting and trapping
