Naming Branched Alkanes
Step 1) Find the longest chain Eg. The longest chain is 7 carbons. = heptane
Step 2) Name the branches that come off your long chain This chain has a methane group on it: = Methylheptane
Step 3) Number the carbon 1-7 starting with the end closest to the functional group Note: If the functional group is on the middle of the chain then you can measure from either end
Step 4) State where the functional group is In this example it is on carbon 4 = 4-methylheptane
Try one… Name the following: Show the name in the 4 steps used to create it Number of carbons name 1methane 2ethane 3propane 4butane 5pentane 6hexane 7heptane 8octane 9nonane
Try one… Name the following: Show the name in the 4 steps used to create it 2-methylpropane Number of carbons name 1methane 2ethane 3propane 4butane 5pentane 6hexane 7heptane 8octane 9nonane
What if there is more than 1 chain added on to it? Step 1) Find the longest chain Step 2) Number the longest chain starting on the side with the closest functional group Step 3) List the branches starting with the ones at the beginning of the chain.
Example 2-methyl-3-methyl-4-ethylheptane
Example 2-methyl-3-methyl-4-ethylheptane OR 2,3-dimethyl-4-ethylheptane
What if there was 2 methyl groups on different carbons Two = Di Two methyl = Dimethyl Example:
What if there was 2 methyl groups on different carbons Two = Di Two methyl = Dimethyl Example: 2,3-dimethylhexane
What if there was 2 methyl groups on the same carbon Two = Di Two ethyl = Diethyl Example:
What if there was 2 methyl groups on the same carbon Two = Di Two ethyl = Diethyl Example: 3-diethylhexane
