Question of the Day Why is it called “poetry” Comes from the ancient Greek work poieō, which means “I make, or compose.” Comes from the ancient Greek work poieō, which means “I make, or compose.”

Simile and Metaphor

SimileMetaphor The boss’ entrance into the room was like thunder. The boss thundered into the room

Simile Metaphor The witness was grilled like a well-done steak by the lawyer. The lawyer grilled the witness on the stand.

Both can be used in the same sentence. The razor sharp mountains high above, left me feeling like an ant below.

Activity Directions With your partner (or group of three), read your simile or metaphor. Read the poem that it came from and discuss why the author might have used it in their poem. Next, create a visual for your metaphor or simile. Try to relate it in some way to the poem as a whole. Be sure to write your simile or metaphor somewhere on your paper. You may use crayons, markers, and/or create a collage using the magazines.

Journal Prompts How was the simile or metaphor used in your poem? What is the difference between simile and metaphor? Why do you think authors use simile and metaphor in their writing? Do you have any questions for me?
