Homelessness and The American Family

Types of Homelessness Chronic Homelessness Persons who are likely to be entrenched in the shelter system and for whom shelters are more like Long-term housing rather than an emergency arrangement often suffering from disabilities and substance abuse problems

Types of Homelessness Transitional Homelessness Generally enter the shelter system for only one stay and for a short period Such persons are likely to be younger Have become homeless because of some catastrophic event, and have been forced to spend a short time in a homeless shelter before making a transition into more stable housing Over time, transitionally homeless individuals will account for the majority of persons experiencing homelessness given their higher rate of turnover.

Causes Most often cited by male participants were relationship breakdown, substance misuse, and leaving an institution (prison, care, hospital etc.). For homeless women, the most common causes were physical or mental health problems and escaping a violent relationship.

Effects The consequences can be brutal. Homelessness damages people's capability through loss of skills, through an inability to think about employment whilst worrying about housing, and through their health becoming impaired whilst homeless. Homelessness also damages people's resilience, self-esteem and self-confidence.

Current Data In the U.S., more than 3.5 million people experience homelessness each year. 35% of the homeless population are families with children, which is the fastest growing segment of the homeless population. 23% are U.S. military veterans. 25% are children under the age of 18 years. 30% have experienced domestic violence % suffer from mental illness. -homelessness-america
