The government closed down news paper stands so that there would be no evidence to suggest that they were not a threat to the country. Tommy Ricketts Tommy Ricketts was bourn in 1901, Middle Arm, Newfoundland and died in 1967, St. John’s Newfoundland. When Tommy was 17 he fought in the battle for Beaumont-Hamel. Tommy was the youngest person to win the Victoria Cross for bravery. Newfoundland was a British colony in the First World War until it joined confederation in The islanders were quick to join the war and fight alongside Canada for Britain. The Royal Newfoundland Regiment took part in some of the goriest battles of the war.

Tommy Ricketts continued In 1916 in the Battle for Beaumont-Hamel the Royal Newfoundland Regiment was almost dead one of there youngest fighters Tommy Ricketts became famous for his courageous actions during the bloody battles all over Europe. Tommy was only 14 when he joined the Royal Newfoundland Regiment and soon took part in the war. When Tommy and his company where under heavy fire he ran unarmed across no-man’s land to collect ammunition then lead a charge against a German battery with no artillery support. 8 Germans were taking prisoner after the attack on their bunker.
