*SOLVING EQUATIONS FOR VARIABLES TO USE THE SUBSTITUTION METHOD. System of Equations

If both equations are written in standard form, in order to use the substitution method ONE of the equations MUST be solved for a variable.

Example 1 x + y = 36 x – y = 6

Example 2 x + y = 15 2x = 3y

Example 3 A theater sold 900 tickets to a play. Floor seats cost $12 each and balcony seats $10 each. Total receipts were $9780. How many of each type of ticket were sold?

CLASSwork Solve each system of equations. SHOW ALL WORK!! 1. x + 3y = x + y = -1 x – 3y = -3 x + y = 3 3. The state fair is a popular field trip destination. This year the senior class at High School A and the senior class at High School B both planned trips there. The senior class at High School A rented and filled 8 vans and 8 buses with 240 students. High School B rented and filled 4 vans and 1 bus with 54 students. Every van had the same number of students in it as did the buses. Find the number of students in each van and in each bus.
