Cultivating a Deeper LIfe

 "The way in which we live out our response to God.“ (Hagberg and Guelich, The Critical Journey)

 Christian Smith, Soul Searching: Moralistic, Therapeutic, Deism

 A God exisits who created and orders the world and watches over life on it.  God wants people to be good, nice and fair to each other as taught in the Bible and most World religions.  The central goal of life is to be happy and feel good about oneself  God does not need to be particularly involved in one’s life unless there is a problem to be solved.  Good people go to heaven when they die.

Christian Spirituality is a responsive spirituality.

Christian Spirituality is an “earthy” spirituality

The practice of Christian spirituality is rooted in this idea that our spirituality is a response to the God who is present in the world and is inviting us to join him there and discover him in all of the places where he resides.

Christian Spirituality is rooted in a rhythm of engagement and retreat

 Mission is participation in Jesus’ promise to be with us.  Missional Spirituality embraces the idea that Jesus is on mission, he is present in the world and when we go into the world we encounter him there.

“When our action is dictated by factors external to our souls, we do not live active lives but reactive lives.” -Parker Palmer (the Active Life)

Retreat is.... “Planned Availability” (Paul Stevens)

 Retreat = solitude  Retreat = Silence  Retreat = Rest  Retreat = Reflection

1. Daily Disciplines 2. Weekly Sabbath 3. Quarterly mini-Retreat 4. Yearly Retreat

We do not keep the Sabbath, the Sabbath keeps us. - Paul Stevens
