Diocese of Gloucester Development Fund Severn Vale Deanery Synod : 15/10/15 “It is more difficult to give money away intelligently than it is to earn it in the first place” (Andrew Carnegie) “The problem is not the money....”

Where has the Development Fund come from? Decision to close Glenfall House Review Group set up by +Michael to consider how to use the funds realised from the sale Agreed that the best use would be to facilitate grass- roots projects across the diocese The Development Fund set up as the vehicle

What funds are available? Funds from the eventual sale of Glenfall House = c. £2.5 – 3 million + Existing Development Fund = c.£1 million + Profits from Good & Faithful Servant, the diocesan property development company Year 1 = £200,000 p.a Year 2 = £300,000 p.a. Then £400,000 p.a. for the balance of 10 years

Who is responsible for the Fund? A ‘semi-independent’ body within the umbrella of the Diocesan Board of Finance Responsibility for running the Fund delegated to a board of Stewards Supported by a part-time Secretary + voluntary team of assessors Aim is to replicate best practice in grant making without establishing a separate Trust

Funding Priorities 1.Spirituality a.Initiatives which enable people who rarely come to church to engage and grow in Christian prayer b.Support for individuals and churches to go deeper in Christian prayer c.Support for individuals and churches exploring healing and wholeness 2.Growing the Church a.Initiatives which enable Christians to engage in culturally appropriate evangelism b.Support for churches to grow their work with children, young people and families c.Training and support for church leaders in creating an environment for growth 3.Serving the Common Good a.Initiatives in which the church works in partnership with other bodies b.Initiatives which enable church buildings to be used by other community groups

Developing New Projects: The Opportunity and The Challenge Charles Handy, The Empty Raincoat, 1993

What next? We would love to see at least 2 initial projects from each of the 9 deaneries Application guidelines will be available shortly Keep your eye out on the diocesan website & monthly bulletins Contact the Secretary if you would like to discuss a project you have in mind: What use could we make of the Development Fund? What are the needs and opportunities in our parish (benefice)? What holds us back from starting a new project? What help do we need to get our project off the ground?
