Police Officer Patrol assigned area to enforce laws and ordinances, regulate traffic, control crowds, prevent crime, and arrest violators. Salary –In 2009, the California average annual wage was $54,900 for entry level workers, and $80,800 for experienced workers. Education –This occupation requires training in vocational schools, related on-the- job experience, or an associate's degree. Some may require a bachelor's degree. –Employees in these occupations usually need one or two years of training involving both on-the-job experience and informal training with experienced workers.

What exactly does a Police Officer do? Process prisoners, and prepare and maintain records of prisoner bookings and prisoner status during booking and pre-trial process. Issue citations or warnings to violators of motor vehicle ordinances. Monitor traffic to ensure motorists observe traffic regulations and exhibit safe driving procedures. Photograph or draw diagrams of crime or accident scenes and interview principals and eyewitnesses. Investigate traffic accidents and other accidents to determine causes and to determine if a crime has been committed. Render aid to accident victims and other persons requiring first aid for physical injuries. Identify, pursue, and arrest suspects and perpetrators of criminal acts. Provide for public safety by maintaining order, responding to emergencies, protecting people and property, enforcing motor vehicle and criminal laws, and promoting good community relations.

Outlook for the Future During 2009, there were approximately 63,589 people employed in this field in CA. It is estimated that in 2016 there will be 72,200 employed in CA. This represents an increase of 1,090 new positions each year (1.70%).
