UNESCO is known as the "intellectual" agency of the United Nations. It is a specialized agency of the UN created with the purpose to promote peace and understanding among nations through education, science, culture, communication and information.

Every two years the General Conference assigns specific tasks to the Board. Other functions stem from agreements concluded between UNESCO and the United Nations.
