Chapter 5 Biological Diversity and Conservation 5.1 Vanishing Species 5.2 Conservation of Biodiversity

Section 5.1 Vanishing Species Explain biodiversity and its importance. Relate various threats to the loss of biodiversity

Biological Diversity(生物多样性) Biodiversity refers to the variety of species in a specific area

Importance of Biodiversity Importance to nature An organism suffers when a plant or animal it feeds upon is removed permanently from a food chain or food web. A population may soon exceed the area’s carrying capacity if its predators are removed. If the symbiotic relationships among organisms are broken due to the loss of one species, then the remaining species will also be affected.

Importance of Biodiversity Importance to people

Areas improving Biodiversity Edge effect- area where two or more ecosystems meet and the migration of species between both sets of abiotic factors increases biodiversity How does this relate to human being?

Questions Why do tropical rainforests have such great biodiversity?

Threats to Biodiversity Endangered species(濒危物种) endangered species when its numbers become so low that extinction is possible Threatened species When the population of a species is likely to become endangered, it is said to be a threatened species

Question What are two ways a species can become endangered?

Threats to Biodiversity Habitat loss

Threats to Biodiversity Habitat fragmentation • breaking of a habitat through natural or unnatural causes Can cut off migration lines, recourses, etc.

Threats to Biodiversity Habitat degradation Acid rain Water pollution Land pollution Exotic species Depletion of Atmospheric Ozone

Question

Conservation Biology Legal protections of species Preserving habitats Protecting Natural Resources

Habitat corridors Protected land that allows migration to different areas

Conservation Biology Sustainable development Reintroduction and species preservation programs Captivity Protecting plant species
