SMSC: Cultural & Historical Awareness

The Second World War Neville Chamberlain tried to prevent war through the policy of Appeasement. Hitler broke the Munich Agreement (by invading Czechoslovakia, which he had promised not to do it Britain agreed he could take the Sudetenland) At the end of the war the true nature of the Holocaust was discovered. Over 60 million people were killed during the Second World War (including from war-related disease and famine)

The American Civil War Fought between the Northern and Southern states of America Ostensibly about the abolition of slavery (although there were many other political reasons aswell) Over 600,000 soldiers were killed (this figure does not include civilian casualties) This is more than the total American soldiers killed in the First and Second World Wars combined. Slavery was abolished but it was another 100 years before the Civil Rights Movement achieved anything like racial equality in the USA.

The Iraq War The USA and its allies (including the UK) invaded Iraq in 2003, claiming that Saddam Hussein's regime had 'Weapons of Mass Destruction' that threatened the Western world. Additionally, he was seen as a dictator who abused his own people. Over 100,000 Iraqi civilians have been killed since the start of the war. Around 5,000 military personnel have been killed since the start of the war. No evidence of Iraq's WMD has been found. Iraq now suffers secular and ethnic terrorism.

Watch the video by clicking on the title. It explores the theme of battling for power in Shakespeare's Macbeth, drawing from historical military figures. What links can you make? Video Clip

Take note: Macbeth & the Theme of War In Macbeth there are at least three wars/battles: oThe war against Macdonwald the traitor. He was killed by Macbeth oThe war against the Thane of Cawdor and the King of Norway. (Cawdor was executed.) oThe war against Macbeth. For Your Information

Does conflict always lead to destruction? Does this depend on when or where you live? How might Shakespearian and modern audiences view this question differently? Write a paragraph or two on the following: Plenary Activity To understand key theme of the play in relation to context and be able to relate text to own and others’ experience.

You are going to swap work with another member of the group. Read their work carefully. Do they understand the theme of war within the play? Can they relate the theme to their own experiences?
