Action Verbs The action someone or something is performing Sally opened the window with great difficulty. The war began. The bus raced through the traffic light.

Linking Verbs A verb that links a subject to a description. –He is a general for the North. –The winners were Tony and I. –He looks tired from all the fighting. These verbs also show that something exists (e.g., is, seems, feels) “Be” forms are the most common. The forms are: –Am, is, are, was, were Example linking verbs— –Feel--Appear--Turn –Taste--Grow--Seem –Look--Remain--Sound –Smell--Stay
Helping Verbs Help to make verb phrases: –A verb phrase = Helping Verb(s) + Action Verb –VP = HV + AV Many different types exist Can use one or more helping verbs –does find –had gone –should see –will have talked –might have told Make sure you find the WHOLE verb phrase if it asks for it!!
Helping Verbs Are placed before other verbs to form verb phrases –Has opened –Will have opened –Could have been opened –Is being opened Forms of “be” are often used as helping verbs –Is, was being, should be, had been, might have been Other helping verbs: –Do -Have -shall-may –Does-has-should-might –Did-had-will-must –Would-can-could
