CHAPTER 4 Negative Numbers

ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION USING NEGATIVE NUMBERS A number line is very useful when you have to do additions or subtractions which involve negatives numbers. Adding a negative numbers is the same as subtracting a positive number eg = -2 – 9eg -4 - (+6) = = - 11 = -10 Subtracting a negative number is the same as adding a positive number eg = eg -2 – (-8) = = 20 = 6

MULTIPLYING AND DIVIDING NEGATIVE NUMBERS + x + = +eg 3 x 8 = 24 + x - = -eg 3 x –8 = x + = -eg -3 x 8 = x - = +eg –3 x -8 = 24 + ÷ + = +eg 42 ÷ 7 = 6 + ÷ - = -eg 42 ÷ - 7 = -6 - ÷ + = -eg –42 ÷ 7 = -6 - ÷ - = +eg –42 ÷ - 7 = 6
