Visual and Performing Arts Framework VAPA California State Framework

VAPA Strands VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS CONTENT STANDARDS for CALIFORNIA PUBLIC SCHOOLS Pre-Kindergarten through Grade Twelve Content Standards in dance, music, theatre, and visual arts were adopted by the State Board of Education in January The standards guide school districts in developing comprehensive arts education programs at each grade level. ARTS CONTENT STANDARDS – COMPONENT STRANDS Component Strand 1: ARTISTIC PERCEPTION Processing, analyzing, and responding to sensory information through language and skills unique to each of the arts Component Strand 2: CREATIVE EXPRESSION Creating, performing, and participating in each of the arts Component Strand 3: HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXT Understanding the historical contribution and cultural dimensions of each of the arts Component Strand 4: AESTHETIC VALUING Responding to, analyzing, and making judgments about works in each of the arts Component Strand 5: CONNECTIONS, RELATIONSHIPS AND APPLICATIONS Connecting and applying what is learned in each of the arts to the study of other art forms, subject areas, and careers

Teacher Reflection Looking at the Visual and Performing Arts Framework, what new knowledge encourages you to utilize the framework in designing future lessons or curriculum?

The Arts are Texts In an age when literacy dominates public discourse on education, we must begin to think more broadly about what students read. Sure—the new Common Core State Standards support the “reading” and scrutiny of other forms of high-quality text. Works of art can, indeed should, be “read” in a very similar way to a poem by Shakespeare or a speech by Winston Churchill. Lynne Munson, President and Executive Director of Common Core -arts (Sept. 13, 2012)

1. What is going on in this picture? 3. What more can we find? 2. What do you see that makes you say that?4. What do you wonder?

According to David Coleman … (An architect of the Common Core State Standards that are being adopted in nearly all 50 states, and now the president of the College Board…) “The great news is that the standards call on so many things the arts do well. The tradition of careful observation, attention to evidence and artists’ choices, the love of taking an artist’s work seriously lies at the heart of these standards.” adds-to-blog-salon-discussion/#more-16907
