Cells and Scientists

Objectives What is a cell How does a cell fit in in the hierarchy of organization? Identify important scientists and what each contributed to science State and explain the 3 parts of the cell theory Define organelle Compare and contrast eukaryotes and prokaryotes

Cell atoms  make up   molecules  make up   organelles  make up   cells  make up   tissues  make up   organs  make up   organ systems  make up   Organisms (LIKE YOU!) IS AN ORGANELLE A LIVING ORGANISM?

Cells Cell = smallest unit that can perform all life processes What kinds of processes are “life processes?”

Important Scientists Anton van Leeuwenhoek –first microscope (simple mircoscope) –(one lens, used light to see microorganisms) Robert Hooke – named cells (compound microscope) –looked at dead oak bark (cork), saw small chambers like rooms in a monastery ONCE UPON A TIME in the mid 1600’s…

Important Scientists Schleiden – all plants are made of cells Schwann – all animals are made of cells Schwan sounds like swan (an animal)

Important Scientists Brown – some cells contain a “prominent structure” –… same guy that did Brownian Motion! Virchow – Brown’s “structure” (aka nucleus) is responsible for cell division –All living things are made of cells

The Summary of all these Ideas led to the… Cell Theory 1. All organisms are composed of one or more cells 1 cell = unicellular 2 + cells = multicellular 2. The cell is the basic unit of structure of organisms 3. All cells come from preexisting cells

Cells are made up of ORGANELLES Organelles = specialized structures that have a specific function in the cell

2 Types of Cells 2 kinds of Organelles and 2 kinds of CELLS ORGANELLECELL Membrane- bound  Eukaryotic Non- membrane bound  Prokaryotic

Cells are made up of ORGANELLES 2 forms of Organelles –Membrane bound –Non-membrane bound 2 Types of Cells from 2 types of Organelles –Eukaryotic –Prokaryotic

–Membrane-bound organelles –Have nucleus –Most are multicellular (plants/animals) –Can be unicellular (some protists – ameba & paramecium) –Larger Eukaryotic Cells

Prokaryotic – No nucleus –No membrane- bound organelles –Single celled organisms (usually) –Smaller (usually) –Example: bacteria

Objectives What is a cell How does a cell fit in in the hierarchy of organization? Identify important scientists and what each contributed to science State and explain the 3 parts of the cell theory Define organelle Compare and contrast eukaryotes and prokaryotes
