ENC 1101 The Reading Process (An Overview)

Get an Overview of the Selection Read biographical information. Prepare a pre-reading journal entry. Consider the title. Read the first time for entertainment. Describe your initial reaction to the reading.

Deepen Your Sense of the Selection Identify the thesis. Number the main points in the margin. Circle key ideas. Comment on point that you either agree with or disagree with. Reread unclear passages. Identify words that you do not know. Reevaluate initial reaction.

Evaluate the Selection Ask yourself if the support is logical and sufficient. Is the selection unified? Is everything presented relevant? Does the selection contain smooth transitions? Do the stylistic devices give the selection a good effect? Does the selection encourage further readings?
