LG: We will use the TPCASTT method to analyze poetry.(In the top left corner of your TPCASTT paper indicate where you are on the Learning Scale. 4 – I am knowledgeable in the TPCASTT method and confident I could use it to accurately analyze any poem. 3 – I am familiar with the TPCASTT method and could use it to analyze poetry with a little guidance. 2 – I don’t know what TPCASTT is but I can probably analyze a poem using my knowledge of figurative language and poetic devices. 1 – I don’t know what TPCASTT is and I don’t know how to analyze a poem.

Read the TPCASTT Analysis sheet. Underline any key ideas you notice. Write one question you have.

Share your question with your mates. Can you help your mates answer their questions?

“THE SEVEN AGES OF MAN” We will draw conclusions about a poem based on evidence from the poem. I will read the poem and complete the TPCASTT analysis.

Look at the index card on your table. This is your assigned element. With your group: Examine and discuss your element. Decide on 2-3 key words that capture the main idea. Write them boldly on the back of the card. Be prepared to explain how to use this element in order to better understand the poem. (Why do you think it is important?)

Ladies and Gentlemen, present your elements!

Theme = feeling/emotion/concept/ide a + result (as seen in the story)

CLARIFICATIONS Was your question answered? Do you have any other questions at this point?

In your groups, complete the first element. “The Seven Ages of Man” Speculate on what you think the poem might be about. Often times authors conceal meaning in the title and give clues in the title. Jot down what you think this poem will be about.

Now read the poem!

Complete the paraphrase element of TPCASTT with your group. Paraphrasing should be done on the poem. Try to paraphrase line by line or sentence by sentence. Word for word is not necessary. DO NOT SUMMARIZE. Example: The world is a giant stage and all the people are actors playing their assigned parts. We enter at birth, and exit at death.
