Make a statement to be proven For example… This is evident because… This is apparent when… This is shown when… This shows/proves… This example highlights… When the author states this, it shows______because_____. 1. Dickens uses a variety of effective verbs in his writing. For example, he depends on the power of verbs like “tearing, yelling, and screaming” (Dickens 19). These verb choices make the writing more dramatic and give the reader a better idea of the action. 2. Dickens uses negative words to describe Fagin. This is evident when he uses the phrase “villainous-looking and repulsive face” (Dickens 223). These negative words show the reader that Fagin is a bad character who is also unattractive. 3. Dickens builds drama when writing about specific events in the novel. This becomes most apparent when Oliver is being chased in chapter 10, and Dickens uses direct speech such as “‘Stop thief! Stop thief!’” (118). Using direct speech builds drama by making it seem more realistic to the reader. 4. Dickens uses exceptionally descriptive settings in his writing. This is shown most clearly when the author states that “the walls and ceiling of the room were perfectly black with age and dirt” (Dickens 23). These descriptive words set the scene for the reader and provide a clearer picture of the setting. POINTEVIDENCEEXPLANATION P-E-E CHAIN
