Developmental Guidance Class

What is it? Developmental guidance is the process of leading, directing, and advising students through a program of experiences which provides information, support, instruction, and encouragement to assist in developing personal/social, academic, and career skills as well as a sense of community involvement/improvement.

Philosophy of Developmental Guidance Classes To reach all students To develop the whole student Be proactive By helping students understand their strengths and weaknesses, teaching students ways to deal with conflicts, handle their anger, study effectively, etc., they can adjust to the world and live more positive lives

Why Implement Developmental Guidance? To enhance student learning. As students achieve developmental competencies, their perceptions of themselves and their opportunities will become more positive.

Developmental Guidance and its Domains Learning to Learn (Educational) Activities in this area help students experience information, which will in turn enable them to get the most out of each learning situation. Students will exercise such skills such as decision making, critical thinking, problem solving, logical reasoning, goal setting, organization, and study skills.

Developmental Guidance and its Domains Learning to Live (Personal/Social) This component assists students in the development of skills relating to other individuals, groups, and themselves. A primary goal for students is developing a strong positive self- concept.

Developmental Guidance and its Domains Learning to Earn (Career/Vocational) This component includes the development of a positive attitude toward work and skills that will assist students to make a positive transition from school to work and from job to job. Students will think about what skills they possess, what their interests are, and how they can develop these skills and pursue these interests by getting involved in activities.

When are Developmental Guidance classes? Each 5 th grade student will have 1 Minimester (or 30 days) of developmental guidance lessons lead by the 5 th grade school counselor.
