Mrs. Wharton’s Science Class

Function The respiratory system moves oxygen from the outside environment into the body. Respiration- the process in which oxygen and glucose undergo a complex series of chemical reactions inside cells. As air travels from the outside environment to the lungs, it passes through the nose, pharynx, and bronchi. Respiration- Produces carbon dioxide and water.

Vocabulary Cilia- tiny hairs that are found in the nose and inside the trachea Pharynx- the throat Trachea- windpipe Bronchi- direct air into the lungs Lungs- main organs of respiratory system, include bronchi Alveoli- tiny sacs of lung tissue specialized for the movement of gases between air and blood. Found at the end of the bronchi.

Gas Exchange After air enters the alveolus, oxygen passes through the wall of the alveolus and then through the capillary wall into the blood. Carbon dioxide and water pass from the blood into the alveoli

Breathing Diaphragm- a large dome shaped muscle at the base of your lungs. When you breathe, the actions of your rib muscles expand or contract your chest, causing air to flow in or out.

Voice Larynx- voice box located at the top of the trachea Vocal cords- 2 folds of connective tissue that stretch across the opening of the larnyx
