Native American

 Narratives that usually use animal characters to convey folk wisdom, make sense of human nature, and develop proper human behavior.  What can we expect to see in a trickster tale?  Magical transformations/Supernatural  Animals that act like humans  Mythical origins of natural phenomena

Tricksters are “archetypal characters”—character types that can be found in literary works from different cultures across the ages Tricksters are often clever, yet sometimes irresponsible and dishonest.

 What are some modern tricksters from pop culture?

 Same reasons as creation myths, but the main purpose of trickster tales is to teach a lesson based on the characters’ actions.

 He is known as the Trickster or the Old Man.  He is seen as either a  culture hero (brave)  numskull (foolish)  clever deceiver (tricky)

Characterization: the act of creating or describing characters or people. Methods of characterizing:  Showing character’s appearance  Displaying actions  Revealing character’s thoughts  Letting character speak  Getting reactions of others
