Safe Schools Presentation Assignment 2B Jordann Feinberg National University Tuesday, May 21, 2013

Target Audience: Fifth and Sixth Grade Students

A Two Part Lesson on Bullying Part One: Bullying intro, video clip, definition, brainstorming/mind map, and listening to bullying songs. Part Two: Collaboratively create anti-bullying posters.

Objective: To learn what bullying is and how it makes people feel.

Bullying 1)Put your hands of your head if you have ever heard the word bullying. 1)Put your hands on your head if you know what bullying is.

Turn to your partner and tell them what you know about bullying. Bullying is... (2-3 minutes each student)

Bullying Video Clip (5 mins)

What is bullying? Calling names Picking on someone over and over Hurting someone on purpose

Bullying Definition: Bullying is when a person says or does hurtful things over and over. *Students to copy this definition into their notebooks.

Have you ever seen bullying happen? Do you have a friend or a sibling that has been bullied? Have you ever been bullied?

Bullying Songs: Simple Plan “Welcome To My Life” Music Video: Taylor Swift “Mean” Music Video: Pass out the song lyrics Listen to songs as a class Small group discussions about the songs

Poster Details: Small groups of 4-5 students (arranged by the teacher). Students work together to create an anti-bullying poster. Each group must create a slogan for their poster. The teacher assigns each team member a job; all students are expected to participate in creating the poster. Jobs include: team leader, computer researcher, illustrator, writer, presenter. Students may print out images from the computer, cut out photos from magazines, and draw by hand. Creativity is encouraged and the teacher provides the necessary materials (poster, glue, markers, scissors, computer/printer, magazines, etc.).

Homework: Tell your parents what bullying is. Pick a song that lifts your spirits when you are feeling low. Have a parent help you look up the song’s lyrics online, and then write down one important/meaningful phrase from the song in your notebook.
