Matter Definition  Anything that has mass and takes up space (has volume)  Matter is made up of atoms.
Melting Solid  Liquid Energy is added, particles speed up (endothermic) Melting Point: Temp. at which a substance melts Freezing Liquid  Solid Energy.
Section A change in matter from one form to another is known as phase change. There are four main kinds. A substance always loses or gains heat.
Vocabulary Set #1. Condensation the process of changing from a gas to a liquid.

Presentation transcript:

What is matter? What is it made of? How do we group it? Why should you care?

ANYTHING that has mass (weight) and takes up volume (space) What is matter?

What is it made of? Atoms

How do we group it? By physical and chemical properties

Why should you care? Because EVERYTHING you touch, see, react with is matter. YOU are matter! If you do not understand the basic properties of matter then you can not safely mix ANY substances!!!!

What are the states of matter? What are the four states? How are they different? What are examples? How does matter change between states? What are the changes called? 30tE&feature=related
