A Famous Californian Landmark Mt. Whitney, California, is the highest point in all of the United States. It is also the most often climbed mountain in the Sierra Nevada Range.

An Important Event in California’s History The California gold rush began in 1848, although it did not reach it’s full swing until The “forty-niners” came to California in search of Gold after John Sutter discovered a large amount of gold near where he was having a mill built. “Boom towns” quickly appeared wherever gold was discovered, and although some disappeared as quickly as they came, Sacramento and San Francisco are examples of Boom Towns that remain strong today.

A Famous Person from California’s History: Father Junipero Serra Father Serra was a Spanish Priest who, despite great personal sacrifice, contributed to the Spanish exploration of what is now part of the State of California. He started nine missions in California, and by the time of his death, his missions had converted nearly 5000 native Americans to Christianity.

Comprehension Questions: Click once to begin, and again to see the answer to the question. 1) Where is the highest point in the United States located? A) Mt. Whitney, California 2) Name one “Boom Town” city that still remains strong today. A) Sacramento or San Francisco are both acceptable answers 3) How many missions did Father Serra help found in California? A) Nine

*Placeholder* *Not an original California Design* This quarter design was submitted to the state of Illinois’ quarter committee. It features a collection of the state’s symbols, and shows all of the required state quarter elements: the year the state joined the union, the state name, the year the quarter is scheduled to be minted, and the motto E Pluribus Unum (One from Many). It may be worth noting that there is a small controversy currently brewing about the common use of the state outline in the state quarters. Collectors are asking that states determine a more creative way of portraying the state’s “essence” than a simple outline of the state. This coin design features both of what collectors love and hate about the new quarter designs.
