Lord of the Flies Operation: FINISH THE NOVEL Day Five

p “What are you going to do, Ralph?…I want my glasses.” -Piggy, Ralph, and Samneric decide to reclaim Piggy’s glasses and re-assert the importance of fire. They debate about whether to “smarten up” in order to remind the savages of home.

Piggy, Ralph, and Samneric set off for Jack’s tribe. Piggy, who cannot see anything, must be led by the others. The boys arrive at Castle Rock and are greeted by the painted savages. Roger tells the boys to halt, but Ralph blows the conch to call an assembly. p. 162 – “Roger took up a small stone…”

After Samneric are captured, Ralph flees by himself. Sensing that Jack’s tribesmen are behind him, he hides in the thicket until he sees that Samneric have taken over the watch. Bottom of p. 172 – “He called very gently…” to bottom of p. 175.

As he hides, Ralph contemplates what it means that Roger has “sharpened a stick at both ends.” With thoughts racing through his mind, he falls asleep and wakes to the savages who have begun their hunt. p. 177 – (“At last he heard a voice…”) to the top of p. 180 (“Smoke!”)

Ralph realizes that the savages have set fire to the forest, and he continues to flee in realization of how far the savages will go to destroy him. Bottom of p. 183: “Five yards away the savage stopped…”
