Characterization and Perspective Monday, January

Today, I will formulate multiple perspectives on a given issue by writing informed predictions about how two different characters would react to a situation using evidence from the novel as support.

Set Up Get your notebook set for Cornell Notes (two-column notes)

Characterization Characters and their actions help us gain a better understanding of the novel. The characters help show the reader different perspectives.

Characterization :What to notice What the character looks like What the character thinks What the character says What the character feels (emotions) What the character does Where the character goes

Character of Choice: Ralph On one side of your handout, copy down the notes about Ralph

Character Name Write down “Ralph” for the character name

What he looks like (appearance) -Fair hair (7) -Attractive appearance -Wet clothing

What he thinks If he ignores Piggy, he’ll stop talking (8) Group ought to have a chief (22) Must decide if it is an island (23) “Ought to draw a map” (27)

What he says Says Piggy’s name over and over after being asked not to do so (11) Dad is in the Navy (taught Ralph how to swim) (13) “We’d better all have names” (21) “This belongs to us” (29)

What he feels (emotions) “He hovered between the two courses of apology or further insult” (25) “Better Piggy than Fatty” (25) Feels triumphant when pushes the boulder (28)

What he does (actions) Tries to ignore Piggy at the beginning (8) Takes off clothes to be free (10) Plays the conch (17) Goes exploring with Simon and Jack (24) Walks along the beach Goes into the jungle “Ralph expressed the intensity of his emotion by pretending to knock Simon down” (27)

Where he goes Leaves the crash, walks along the shore, climbs onto the platform Explores the island with Simon and Jack (24) Walks to the top and discovers it is an island Sees the “scar” of the island

3 Adjectives to Describe Ralph Popular Piggy and the other kids respect Ralph and elect him on nothing more than the fact that he holds the conch Work with your elbow partner to come up with 2 more adjectives

Your Turn! In pairs or groups of 3, describe your assigned character the same way we described Ralph. *Include page numbers Be ready to present one section to the class

What would your characters do? What would your two characters do if the signal fire went out? Provide support from your analysis of each character. What would your two characters do if they had to choose between the safety of the tribe and hunting? Provide support from your analysis of each character.
