EYFS and Key Stage 1 Parents Workshop for Numeracy Tuesday 17 th September 2013 St. Michael and St. Martin Catholic Primary School

Helps make sense of the world around us through developing ability to;  Calculate  Reason  Solve problems It is a core subject taught within the National Curriculum. The government made clear the importance of numeracy in the national curriculum, where numeracy was describe as equipping ‘pupils with a uniquely powerful set of tools to understand and change the world’.

How we as a school teach maths: The children have access to 5 numeracy lessons a week including 1 mental maths lesson. Numeracy is kept simmering throughout the day through games and questions and we apply numeracy to as many different real life situations as possible. Some children will be given extra small group support. We set suitable learning challenges. We respond to pupils diverse individual needs. We help the children overcome potential barriers they may have in their learning.

Nursery- Calculation Policy Children will be given the opportunity and encouraged to: Autumn Term: Use some number names and number language spontaneously. Use some number names accurately in play. Show an interest in shape and space by playing with shapes or making arrangements with objects. Recognise numerals 1-5. Spring Term: Show an interest of numerals in the environment. Separate groups of three or four objects in different ways, beginning to recognise that the total is still the same. Show an interest in representing numbers. Use positional language. Begin to use mathematical names for 2D shape and begin to describe them. Summer Term: Recognise and order numerals Show an interest in number problems. Show an interest in representing numbers.

Reception- Calculation Policy Children will be given the opportunity and encouraged to: Autumn Term: Recognise the numbers Count up to 10 objects reliably. Order the numbers 1 to 10. Name 2D shapes on sight. Spring Term: Recognise and order the numbers 1 to 20. Find one more or one less of a number to 20. Use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money to compare quantities and objects to solve problems. Recognise, create and describe patterns. Name 3D shapes on sight. Summer Term: Explore the characteristics of everyday objects and shapes and use mathematical language to describe them. Add and subtract two single digit numbers. Develop their mental maths skills by counting on or back from a number when calculating. Solve problems including doubling, halving and sharing.

As a parent/ carer it is essential that you help your child with their numeracy skills at home. This does not always mean sitting down with your child. Firstly try to make maths as much fun as possible - games, puzzles and jigsaws are a great way to start. It's also important to show how we use maths skills in our everyday lives and to involve your child in this. Identifying problems and solving them can also help your child develop maths skills. If you see him or her puzzling over something, talk about the problem and try to work out the solution together. Don't shy away from maths if you didn’t like it at school. Try to find new ways to enjoy the subject with your child.

Choose a shape of the week e.g. cylinder. Look for this shape in the environment (tins, candles etc). Ask your child to describe the shape to you (2 circular faces, 2 curved edges..) Let your child help you with the washing! Can they match the socks for you? Choose some food items out of the cupboard. Try to put the objects in order of weight, by feel alone. Check by looking at the amounts on the packets. Have a ‘fact of the day’. Pin this fact up around the house. Practise reading it in a quiet, loud, squeaky voice. Ask your child over the day if they can recall the fact. Use a TV guide. Ask your child to work out the length of their favourite programmes. Can they calculate how long they spend watching TV each day / each week? Most importantly- Have fun with your child learning maths! It really is everywhere!

Times Tables Passport Bronze: Know the times tables in order. Silver: Know the times tables in random order. Gold: Know all their tables and can apply them to different areas of maths and use them to help with their division. By the end of KS1 children should know their 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables.

The calculation policy will be going on the school website from tomorrow. Please look at the strategies we use as they may be different from the ones you used at school!!
