15-17 Nov 2004 Italy-Vietnam Cooperation Perspectives 2 1. Cleaner Production in Vietnam CP = process-based approach to environmental management in industry >< end-of-pipe solutions; Concept relatively new in Vietnam (about 10 years); Dissemination still limited in scope, despite efforts by Sida, Cida, Danida, UNEP and UNIDO.

15-17 Nov 2004 Italy-Vietnam Cooperation Perspectives 3 2. UNIDO and CP in Vietnam Present since 1997 in HCMC, and 1998 in Hanoi; Both projects include a mix of: Awareness-raising activities; Training; In-plant CP assessments; Cluster-based dissemination; Cleaner Technology advice; Policy advice.

15-17 Nov 2004 Italy-Vietnam Cooperation Perspectives 4 2. UNIDO and CP in Vietnam Both projects promote the business case of CP, namely: environmentally responsible behaviour and profitability need not be mutually exclusive targets.

15-17 Nov 2004 Italy-Vietnam Cooperation Perspectives 5 3. UNIDO CP project in HCMC HCMC counts nearly 30,000 firms and produces one-third of industrial output in Vietnam; Emphasis of the project there is on: Monitoring six demo factories in textile (2), pulp and paper (2) and food processing (2); CP circles in cassava, rubber and pulp and paper; Communication and media campaigns; Training for managers, workers; Policy advice.

15-17 Nov 2004 Italy-Vietnam Cooperation Perspectives 6 3. UNIDO CP project in HCMC Example of CP benefits: Thanh Cong Textile company: >5000 workers; >550 tons of dyed textiles per year.
