LET’S REVIEW THE BONES OF THE SKULL
Human Skull. Human Skull – 22 bones 2 parts: 1.Cranium (8 bones fused at sutures) – protects brain, provides muscle attachment, sinuses reduce weight.
Skull Usually consists of 22 bones, all of which (except the lower jaw) are firmly interlocked along lines called “sutures”. Cranium = 8 bones Facial skeleton.
THE SKULL SIMPLY, AMAZING!. Most complex bony structure 22 bones in all Mostly flat bones, but not all!
 Formed by two sets of bones. ◦ Cranium: encloses and protects the fragile brain tissue ◦ Facial bones: hold the eyes in an anterior position and allow.

SKELETAL SYSTEM

SKULL=CRANIUM & FACIAL BONES 1. Cranium : made up of 8 bones separated by sutures.  Infants have fontanels which is an opening between cranial bones. Will close by 2 years old to form suture lines.  --Frontal (1)  --Parietal (2)  --Occipital (1)  Temporal (2)  Sphenoid (1)  Ethmoid (1)

ON THE TEMPORAL BONE 1. External auditory meatus- (ear canal) 2. Mandibular fossa-articulates with mandible 3. Mastoid process-holds neck muscles 4. Styloid process-attachment for tongue muscle & larynx 5. Zygomatic process-cheek bones

FACIAL BONES (14) 1. Maxillae-upper jaw (2) 2. Palatine bones-roof of mouth (2) 3. Zygomatic bones- cheeks(2) 4. Lacrimal bones- (2) 5. Nasal bones- (2) 6. Vomer bone- forms nasal septum (1) 7. Inferior nasal concha-supports mucous membrane (2) 8. Mandible-lower jaw (1)

HYOID BONE  U-shaped bone  Only bone in the body that does NOT articulate with another.  Anchors the tongue

OPENINGS IN THE SKULL 1. Foramen- a round opening through a bone *the larges in the body is the Obturator foramen(pelvis) and foramen magnum (base of skull) 2. Fossa-a depression; often shallow 3. Meatus-a tube-like passage through a bone 4. sinus- a cavity or hollow space
