Co-Mail UPDATE Jim Wiseman

Co-Mailing What is it?

Co-mailing is the process of merging individual mail pieces from multiple mail files into a single mailing stream. This process improves the Post Office’s delivery sortation for the total mailing which helps to reduce delivery costs and the Customers postage

Co-Mailing can be produced two ways. It can be in-line on selective Inserters, Stitchers or Binders where data files are used to make up different books or packages for each individual Co-Mailing can also be done off-line with machines the take finished books or envelopes and again selectively insert them into the appropriate bundles based upon the Postal Codes in the data files

Benefits of Co-Mailing include: Co-Mailing reduces the number of times a mail pieces needs to be handled within the Post Office Reduces the number of Mail Trays, Tubs, sacks or Pallets that are required and handled Reduces the number of Mail Statements that need to be produced and processed by the Revenue Verification Unit Reduces the transportation costs as more Mail fits into Pallets or Trays so less Residue Mail is produced and needed to be manually processed

Benefits of Co-Mailing include: Moves more Mail further into the Postal system at less costs and reduces handling and labour costs Lowers Postage costs for customers as more pieces qualify for lower rate categories Allows smaller Mailers to qualify for Pre-sorted Mail rates by building larger lists that exceed Canada Post minimums Improvement in Pre-sort with larger densities for each Postal Code Quicker delivery with less handling of product, so product arrives in better condition

What is Co-Palletization? Co-Palletization consolidates the physical bundles of mail, which have already been addressed and presorted onto pallets or trays in order to create more density to the Mail which will allow the Mail to be processed further into the Postal System. This process enables short run or supplemental mailings that would not have had the geographic density to build pallets or trays on their own to ship on pallets by "sharing the ride" with other mail. It is a very labor intensive process so typically difficult to off-set any Postage savings

What is the difference between Co-Mailing and Co-Palletization? Co-Palletization groups the physical bundles of mail, which have already been addressed and presorted into Trays, Tubs, bags or Pallets in order to reduce the number of Trays, Tubs or bagged mail and create more dense pallets. These pallets then can be shipped further into the Postal System to help reduce handling and Shipping costs. Co-mail, on the other hand, combines individual pieces of mail into new, better presorted bundles and has a huge impact on presort densities to a Letter Carrier and moves the Mail further downstream.

IS THIS SOMETHING THAT WOULD BE BENNIFICIAL FOR YOUR COMPANY?

Co-Mailing – Where do we go from here? Is this something we should be asking Canada Post to offer Mailers? Are you interested in finding out more about Co-Mailing? Contact Jim Wiseman or any NAMMU Board Member with Questions or idea’s
