Sample Lesson Plan-Writing

Intro (how do you capture their attention and get them interested?): Pass out the worksheet that they will be filling out for the video. Go over the questions that are on the worksheet. Have a pre-discussion on what kind of effects alcohol has on the body. Watch video (documentary) and answer questions on the worksheet. Body (what comes after your interesting intro?) Discuss answers to the worksheet. See if the students have any questions or comments about the video. Then the worksheets will be collected for participation grade. Effects activity: the class will be split into two teams. Each team is going to get a stack of index cards with effects on it. As a group you must figure out which are short term and which are long term. The team with the most correct answers will receive a prize (candy). We will go down the list as a class and see who put it the correct category. Each note card in the right spot is worth 1 point. Next we will write a letter in our journals. Here is the prompt: What a great day! The sun is shining, but it is not windy on this fall day. You decide to ride your bike for a while. It seems like out of nowhere a car flies up behind you and hits you. You have to go to the hospital in an ambulance. Both of your legs are broken and one of your arms is broken too. You will have to miss school and will not get to play basketball this year. You will heal and you will be fine, but it will take a long time and will be very painful. It turns out this driver was drunk. Write this drive a letter and tell him how you feel. When everyone is done writing their letters have the students who want to share read their letters allowed.

Sample Lesson Plan-Writing Closure (purposeful summary-help them remember today or anticipate tomorrow): Ask the students to bring up some common themes you had in your letter compared to the letters that were read. Have a mini discussion about what they put in their letters. Collect the journals as they pack up to leave class. Ask the class three short term and three long term effects of alcohol. They will share it orally. Homework: Finish you tic-tac-toe assignment and work on your PSA (give students their topics) Assessment: (How will you assess if they have mastered your objectives? Be specific.) Group work will be assessed by how well the teams work together with the side effects activity. Journals will be assessed by the language used and how they are able to express themselves. This will also help me to see if they understand how drunk drivers effect themselves and everyone around them.
