Line: the path of a point made by a drawing utensil: also the quality of a line (thick, thin, mechanical, or whimsical) Students will complete 3 exercises, each done an a separate sheet of paper. Each exercise is worth 30 points

On Problems 1 & 2 use pen and ink sharpies, colored pencils, crayons and combinations of all for this composition. (No pastels.) Problem 1: Line has infinite variety according to the media used and the manipulation of that media by the artist. Cover a whole sheet of paper with lines using every media you have available. Use a variety of lines (thick, thin, straight, curved, dotted, zigzag, winding, curly, etc.) Make the composition interesting for the viewer to follow. Have a plan to organize your work.

Problem 2: Fold an 8½ “x 11” piece of paper into fourths and follow these directions: Lines may vary as to direction and position. In each section, create an interesting line pattern following the directions below. Section 1 The pattern is to be composed of ONLY horizontal and vertical lines. Section 2 The pattern is ONLY diagonal lines. Section 3 The pattern is ONLY curved lines. Section 4 The last pattern is a combination of lines of all directions. Vary the length, thickness and color of the line to make each pattern interesting.

Problem 3: You MUST use tempera paint for this problem. On a piece of paper draw a continuous line without ever leaving the paper with your pencil. Overlap the lines and “wander”. When you have filled the paper with these overlapping lines, use 3 different values of ONE color (dark, medium, light) to create an interesting composition. Try to make the pattern interesting.
