Write down three safety rules we talked about in the past few days. Talk with someone near you and see how many ways are out there to lift a car for service. Quick Review:

Protect yourself, and all those around you! Safety with tools and lifts Shop Safety : Tool Safety

Shop Safety If a student has long hair, a rubber band or a hat should be used to keep the hair back in a safe position at all time to avoid getting them caught in belts and pulleys on the engine. Also, watch out for clothing that has strings that hang down that can get caught.

Shop Safety The wearing of loose clothing such as an unbuttoned shirt sleeves around pulleys, fan belts, or drill presses is dangerous and could cause an arm to be pulled in and seriously injured.

Shop Safety Wipe all tools and pieces of equipment clean before returning to the tool panel. Greasy tools are slippery and can cause injury

Shop Safety When using hand tools: Use only the correct tool for the job Why must one pull instead of push on a wrench? Pulling gives better control and uses strength more efficiently

Shop Safety When Using any power tools do not stand in water. When Using any power tools do not stand in water. Become familiar with safety precautions before working with power equipment. Get teacher permission before using any power equipment so you do not cause injury to yourself or others. Become familiar with safety precautions before working with power equipment. You should know the equipment before you try to use it or you may get hurt. Know the Equipment

Shop Safety Always disconnect the vehicle’s battery before working on any electrical circuit. The negative (or ground) cable should always be disconnected first. This will prevent sparks which could cause a battery to explode.

What is the safety hazard?

Shop Safety Always unplug a battery charger before disconnecting from a battery. Charging a battery causes hydrogen gas to come from the battery. Any spark may cause the battery to explode.

Shop Safety An open flame near a battery may cause hydrogen and oxygen gas in the battery to explode. d_TnsHu2u4c

Shop Safety Use your safety glasses, face shield and the glass guard when grinding to prevent sparks and pieces of metal or stone from hitting you in the face or eyes.

Shop Safety Never distract anyone who is working with power equipment. Always announce yourself when approaching someone that is using power equipment. This will prevent an accident.

Wheel Balancer safety When balancing wheels the protective cover protects the operator from The spinning wheel. Flying weights. Material caught in the tread.

Drill press safety Center punch: the work Check for the chuck

Shop Safety Use a brush and dust pan to clean the metal shavings from drill press or the work benches. Drill shavings are razor sharp and can cut your hands and fingers. Compressed air should only be used for Air operated tools and machines

Shop Safety When finished using a vise, close the jaw and leave the handle in the vertical position (up and down) so people wont be injured by running into the handle.

Shop Safety It is unsafe to leave a creeper on the floor because someone may step on it and their feet will go out from under them. When the creeper is not in use either push it under the car, or stand it up against the car or return it to the rack.

Shop Safety A hydraulic jack is not a safe car support because the seal on the piston can leak or break at any time and the car will come down fast.

Jacks The proper lifting points for a floor jack are: Frame, control arms and cross- members. Two hydraulic floor jacks never be used to lift a vehicle because: The car would be unstable and could fall off of the jack

Jacks To properly raise a vehicle it is necessary to: Turn the jack handle clockwise then pump The first step in stabilizing a vehicle before lifting it off the ground is chocking the wheels on both sides that remain on the floor

Shop Safety Never go under a vehicle that is supported by a hydraulic jack. Jack stands of the same size must be used to support the car before working under it

Shop Safety Do not lift any person with a floor jack or with the hoist. It increases the chance of slipping or falling and will result in injury.

Floor hoist Automotive lifts

When putting the automobile on a floor hoist, one should: Center it on the hoist Position lift on the frame Get permission form the instructor Lifting

On the twin-post lift a Safety lock catches is used to prevent a sudden fall. When using a twin post lift, check to see that the vehicle is resting securely by raising the car a few inches and gently shaking it What should be done before lowering a vehicle on a twin post lift? Make sure that all workers and all equipment are no longer beneath the car Lifting

Using Jacks and Jack Stands  Never go under a jacked-up vehicle unless it is supported by jack stands.  Warning: Never use concrete blocks or other inadequate devices for supporting a vehicle.
