Anorexia and Bulimia

Anorexia affects your whole body People affected by this end up with very frail and weak bones, as well as with a distinct sensitivity to cold. Often, they’ll have a dry mouth, and suffer from depression.

Age and kilograms of Anorexic people Anorexia is most common in women, typically in white women who are high academic achievers, or just generally very goal oriented.

Symptoms of Anorexia nervosa Usually keeping the same weight, usually under the average weight for that age and height. Fear of getting fat or gaining weight, even though they are underweight. Denial of being seriously underweight. Scientists have found that if anorexia is found and treated early improves the chances of curing this illness. They often have a dry mouth, depression, or extreme sensitivity to cold.

Warning signs of Anorexia nervosa Dramatic weight loss, won't eat certain food such as no carbohydrates, constantly saying they're 'fat' although they are underweight, denial of hunger, anxiety about gaining weight, avoiding meal times or having excuses for not eating a meal, despite weather, illness or injury, they are constantly exercising. Their bodies are very frail and weak, yet they refuse to admit that they have a problem. They often go straight to the bathroom after a meal, or adamantly refuse to eat in front of other people, as well as being extremely sensitive to cold weather.

Symptoms of Bulimia nervosa Bulimia is more common in young girls. They’ll usually eat large amounts of food, only to vomit, exercise excessively, use laxatives or enema diuretics.

Warning signs of Bulimia nervosa Dissipating enamel on the teeth, broken blood vessels in the eye, dry mouth, pouch-like look to the corners of mouth, small cuts/calluses on tips of fingers, hypokalaemia (lower-than-average amount of potassium in the blood) and dehydration.

Reasons & Causes We’re not quite sure what the exact causes of these illnesses are, but here are some thought reasons: general fear of becoming fat, negative self-image, bullying, trying to please others or simply not caring about their life and letting themselves starve. Sometimes, the cause could even be some cultural ideas about health and beauty.
