Science and the Bible A Course of Study by Dr. David C. Bossard Fall, 2007 Week 6 A First Look at Genesis 1

An Introductory look at Psalm 19 Verses 1-6: The Book of God's Works "God" = El, Elohim = God the Creator - The Name used in Genesis 1 Verses 7-13: The Book of God's Words "God" = Yahweh = God the Redeemer - The Name used in Genesis 2-3 (start of the redemption story)

An Introductory look at Genesis 1 Why does the Bible begin with the Creation account? -- What mattered to people in that day? - their gods - their crops - their prosperity and success -- What does Genesis 1 have to do with that? Uncontrollable forces in their lives }

An Introductory look at Genesis 1 The message of Genesis 1: -- God is NOT part of Nature Nature gods are not gods at all. All of Nature is designed by God and under His control. The natural world is "good." - purposeful and harmonious. [- what happens with the Fall?] -- Creation had a beginning -- Humans are created in God's image God put them in charge of his creation ==> The "Science" in the Creation Account is incidental (but accurate)
