Tim Burton, in Edward Scissorhands, uses low key lighting to create a threatening mood. When Peg enters the creepy mansion, she walks up a flight of dusty, cobwebbed stairs to enter the attic. As she enters the attic, there are corners and other areas of the attic that are flooded in darkness and shadows, so that Peg cannot see her full surroundings. Peg is in a vulnerable position, which aids in the threatening mood because she, along with the viewers, does not know what else could lurk in the attic. The lights are lower in one half of the attic, which Peg has her back turned toward. Again, the viewer feels that Peg’s life is threatened as they also hear the sounds of scissors. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory also creates a threatening mood through low key lighting.
