Luminaire Vibration Test Apparatus: P14471 Team MemberMajor Brett Billings, Team LeadIndustrial and Systems Engineering Nicholas Greco, Lead Mechanical EngineerMechanical Engineering Ronald Jimbo, Lead Electrical EngineerElectrical Engineering Ashley WaldrenMechanical Engineering Jacob GardnerMechanical Engineering Claire KobalMechanical Engineering Ryan SeligElectrical Engineering Team Photo Introduction Luminaires to be used in hazardous environments are to be tested to UL 844 standard, which outlines test basic test set up and procedure MSD team P13471 created the eccentric drive mechanism to vibrate the machine Cooper Crouse Hinds wants a updated test apparatus, that addresses some of the flaws of the current machine, while maintaining the UL 844 standard specs. Planning and Design Total displacement of 1/32” and provide 2000 cycles per min for 35 hours Natural frequency of frame must not equal 33 Hz Support a load of 150 lbs Compatible with several conduit sizes Similar space envelope as current machine Support the eccentric drive mechanism Identify customer and engineering requirements Use Morph and Pugh charts to consider all options for each necessary component Research and model mechanical and electrical components Use analysis techniques such as ANSYS Workbench to verify model Final Concept Use I beams for the major supports Use a V-belt drive system to reduce motor speed (3500) to required speed (2000). Use encoder to measure speed Use digital dial gage to measure displacement Use LCD screen to display desired data Paint entire frame to avoid rusting Build and Test Frame – welded and annealed, then painted with rust preventative paint Eccentric Drive Mechanism – changed_____________ to make displacement adjustment easier Electrical Components – Worked with Ryan______ from FMS to set up the VFD, emergency stops Evaluation Lessons Learned: Double check sizes/specs/deliveries Have certified electrician double check wiring diagrams and wire gages Better communication with people both on the project and those doing jobs for the project Do not wait as long to order new parts/talk to professors/seek help for issues Acknowledgements: Mike Zona – Guide Joe Manahan – Engineer at CCH Kevin Wolf – Operator at CCH Dr. Varela – Faculty Advisor Ryan ___-Electrician Cooper Crouse Hinds provided funding for P14471
