Rescue Platform Location/Operations

In this training module we will look at the following piece of Deck Machinery: Rescue Platform We will also take a look at how this unit operates, the location of it’s HPU (where applicable), and other information important to know about this piece of equipment. Rescue Platform

HPU: 480v 3 phase motor, system has electronic Pressure and Flow meter(Digital) on the unit Located in the Aft Hold Hydraulic Fluid: ISO 46 Vegetable based oil HPU On/Off controls on the Aft console in the wheelhouse Hydraulic Hand controls on the Bulwark just forward of the Rescue Platform Extreme Caution: Platform can quickly fold in/out if not controlled properly, creating a pinch point or a striking injury Minimum 3 man operation, with communications Sea conditions will dictate use, the Platform can be damaged by waves when deployed Specifications

Rescue Platform Precautions Danger Points When Deploying or Recovering The Platform, The Operator Must Be Aware Of All Pinch Points and Striking Hazards. The Platform Will Rotate VERY Quickly If Not Properly Controlled. A Serious Crushing Injury Could Occur.

Rescue Platform Precautions Again you can see in this Photo how easily someone or something could become trapped, or get struck if the platform is operated to quickly. Heads up here. A Safety Officer is recommended. Training rules!

Rescue Platform Operations The FBO will be in the Wheelhouse and will operate the on/off switch and also be an observer over the operation. (Good sight lines) He will also know if any other equipment is running. The Captain and the FBO will determine if it is safe to deploy the Rescue Platform. Communications are paramount in these operations, both on and off our vessel. We recommend that a set of verbal commands become standardized on both of these vessels while operating the rescue platform. In an active Rescue Operation, a minimum of 5 crew members should be involved. 1. The FBO in the wheelhouse 2. Captain is the safety Officer 3. One of the Engineers are at the hydraulic controls 4. Two of the Deckhands will be the Rescue/Tenders for the operation involving the platform. One on the Platform Step. The other at the Bulwark opening. In a Rescue Operation, ALL personnel on deck, must be wearing a PFD. (Mustangs) Crew members may also consider using some kind of a tethering-fall restraint while working with the platform. Any hydraulically controlled movement by the Engineer must be requested by the Rescue personnel and/or the Captain, verified by an “ALL CLEAR” before any movement occurs. The crane can be considered for lifting/overhead lighting, conditions permitting.
