Your essay will be 5 paragraphs Introduction (4-5 sentences) 1 st body paragraph – One reason why your reformers should be admitted into the Hall of Fame (8 sentences) 2 nd body paragraph – Another reason (8 sentences) 3 rd body paragraph – Another reason (8 sentences) Conclusion (4-5 sentences)

Introduction Hook: could be something surprising about your reformer or something your reformer said Boil Down: the basics about your reformer (who he/she is/was) Thesis: One sentence explaining your main reason for why he/she should enter the hall of fame

EX Hook: “I have been made to understand in the depth of my soul what discrimination means.” EX Boil Down: Rigoberta Menchu spoke these words because she has lived through the utter terror of a civil war. Menchu was an Indian. Born and raised in Guatemala, her life was plagued by poverty and turmoil. EX Thesis: She should be admitted into the Hall of Fame because she overcame these obstacles and fought for the freedom of her people.

1 st body paragraph Remember the order of sentences: –TS –RDF (first fact) –E (explain) –RDF (second fact) –E (explain) –RDF (third fact) –E (explain) –CS

Remember: A topic sentence… …tells your reader what your paragraph is going to be about.

Make sure the topic sentence… …is a big enough idea that you can write 7 more sentences about it

(T) First of all, Rigoberta Menchu deserves to be in the Hall of Fame because she had to overcome so many obstacles. (RDF) Menchu was is a Mayan Indian and faced a lot of discrimination in Guatemala. (E) In fact, when she worked for White people she was “treated worse than a dog” (worldtrek.org).

(RDF) Although some might argue that Menchu was fortunate because she had work, she was treated very badly by her bosses. (E) She was not paid very much and she was forced to buy everything she needed from her employers (worldtrek.org) They charged way to much and kept her in poverty. (RDF) Finally, she was forced to work in fields where they sprayed deadly and vicious chemicals (worldtrek.org). (E) This cause many people to become sick. (CS) Clearly, Menchu lived through awful conditions. If she was able to overcome such obstacles, how could anyone deny her membership in the Hall of Fame?

Body paragraphs Remember the order of sentences: –TS –RDF (first fact) –E (explain) –RDF (second fact) –E (explain) –RDF (third fact) –E (explain)
