The Monarchy Is Abolished  The War with Prussia began to test France’s morale.  August 10, 1792 Revolutionaries suspect the king is supporting the enemy so they storm Tuileries.

September Massacres  Citizens stormed prisons that held nobles and priests.  Killed roughly 1,200 people

Radicals Take Control  Radicals take control of the National Convention.  Suffrage  Suffrage was given to all male citizens.  They abolished the Monarchy.  They tried and executed Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette.

Terror and Danger Grip France  France remains at war with most of Europe.  In Paris, the Convention becomes divided: Jacobins Girondins

Terror and Danger Grip France Robespierre Robespierre was a lawyer and politician who led the Committee of Public Safety during the Reign of Terror.

Terror and Danger Grips France The Reign of Terror  September 1793 to July 1794  Revolutionary courts conducted hasty trials.  Many people were falsely accused.  300,000 were arrested

Terror and Danger Grips France  17,000 people died during this period. guillotine  The guillotine, an execution device that used a falling blade.  The people turn on the committee and on July 27, 1794 Robespierre is arrested and executed the following day.

The Revolution Enters Its Third Stage  Following the Reign of Terror, the Constitution of 1795 is established.  Creates 5 Man Directory along with a two house legislature.  Corruption led to more instability.

Revolution Brings Change  Political chaos causes the French to turn to the brilliant military leader Napoleon Bonaparte Napoleon Bonaparte. Nationalism  France’s ability to endure the French Revolution and war gave the people a strong sense of Nationalism, or a strong feeling of pride or devotion to their country.
