Lesson goals and objectives At the end of this lesson, students should.. Be able to write a length using different meter prefixes (example: 1 m = 100 cm) Be able to convert between English units and Metric units

Metric Units or System International units (SI units) The most frequently used measurement system in the world. Its standard units are as follows –Length: meter (m) –Volume: Liter (L) –Mass: grams (g) –Time: seconds (s) – Temperature: Celsius

Metric Prefixes Sometimes, a the standard units on the last slide are too small or too large to accurately describe a measurement. For example, it is cumbersome to measure the distance between Middletown and San Francisco in meters. Instead we measure using kilometers, which is a larger group of meters.

Metric Staircase The following slide is a diagram to help convert between prefixes with “meter” as the standard unit. This can be done with any of the standard units listed before. Every time you want to go down a step on the staircase, you need to multiply by 10. Every time you want to go up a step on the staircase, you need to divide by 10.

Example How many meters are there in 1 Hectameter? Answer: we need to go down 2 steps on the diagram so there are 1x10x10 = 100 meters in 1 Hectameter.

Example 2 The distance between MHS and AHS is approximately 5 kilometers. How many meters is that? Answer: To go from kilometers to meters, we go down three steps. 5 x 10 x 10 x 10 = 5,000 meters in 5 kilometers.

Metric Conversions Please complete the “Metric Conversions” practice worksheet at this time.
