Good Afternoon 12 th Graders! DO NOW 1.What feelings or images do you think are associated with flying a kite? 2.What is symbolism? Describe this literary term in your own words.

Symbolism: A symbol is an object, person, situation, or action that operates on two levels of the text: it makes sense within the plot of the story, but it also represents a deeper idea or concept To find symbols, examine: – the names of people and places – lengthy or seemingly unnecessary descriptions – images or objects that repeatedly arise

Examples of Symbolism In The Great Gatsby, the green light shining from Daisy’s dock symbolizes Gatsby’s hopes and dreams for the future. In Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson, the tree that Melinda constantly draws symbolizes her growth.

Close Reading p How did Hally feel about the kite? List some specific words that show his attitude. What might the kite symbolize? Consider the age difference, and race of Sam and Hally. Also consider the unhappy nature of Hally’s childhood.

Mini Lesson: Writing Literary Analysis Paragraphs To write a short analytical response, use the following format to embed quotes: Assertion: This is the topic sentence of your paragraph. Be sure to include the author’s name and title if appropriate. Mention any literary elements you will be discussing (i.e. characterization, symbolism) Context: Set up the quote you will use to support your assertion. Describe what is happening in the story where the quote appears. Write to “an unknowing reader” Quote: This is your textual evidence. Be sure to include the page number. Commentary: 3-5 sentences which explain the quote’s significance and then describe how the quote proves your initial assertion. Begin with a transition like, “this quote demonstrates…” or “in this instance the author highlights…”

Sample ACQC response In Athol Fugard’s play Master Harold and the Boys, Willie is characterized as frustrated and short tempered. Willie is practicing for a ballroom dancing event, and is frustrated when he cannot master the quickstep. Additionally, his girlfriend Hilda is not a skilled dancer, so he beats her when she makes mistakes. Willie’s friend Sam asks him incredulously, “Beating her up every time she makes a mistake in the waltz?” In this instance, Fugard highlights the brutal way Willie treats Hilda. Dancing should be a romantic and fun event, but Willie’s short temper and frustration make the dancing practice fraught with conflict. Willie’s poor treatment of Hilda also signifies the cycle of oppression and abuse in 1950’s South Africa. Since Willie has been abused and oppressed as a black man and servant, he can only take out his frustrations on someone below him in status, like his female friend.

Your task: Take a look at your quick write response about symbolism. Turn this response into an ACQC response which uses at least 1 quote for supporting evidence. Be sure to include at least 4 sentences of commentary. Prompt: In Master Harold and the Boys, what might the kite symbolize?
