“Special” Definitions  Universal Design- A philosophy of designing interiors and products to accommodate ALL people with a variety of needs  Barrier-Free Design- Living spaces designed without structures that prevent access to people with special needs.  Adaptable Design- Design features that are temporary and can easily be changed

Children  Need a safe and healthy housing environment  Need space to grow and develop  Need a safe place outdoors to play  Communities are important What are some necessary modifications for a child?

Elderly  Retirement- housing needs change  Health & Lower Energy Level  Wheelchair, walker, or cane  Difficulty with stairs, slick surfaces  Goal = independence! What are some necessary modifications for the elderly?

Elderly  UD Modifications:  No steps at entrance or in house  Wider doorways (36” min)  Non-slip floors; contrasting colors if change  Flush thresholds  Hand rails in bathrooms and in halls  Lower countertops in bathroom and kitchen  Controls in kitchen that are on front and easy to grasp  Lever door handles  Move appliances lower

Elderly  Examples:

People with Disabilities  1988 Fair Housing Act- more freedom to choose a place to live  American’s with Disabilities Act  Requires that public buildings and housing be accessible  Severe Disabilities: wheelchair, blind, deaf What are some necessary modifications for such a person?

People with Disabilities  UD Modifications:  Similar to modifications for elderly  Prominently mark changes in floors and countertops  Place furniture out of traffic lanes  Increased lighting  Braille on controls  Special phone or doorbell  Relocate appliances
