Multiplying 2-Digit Numbers by Multiples of Ten Problem: In January, Tim’s aquarium had 23 guppies. A year later, he had 90 times as many guppies. How many guppies does Tim have now? Find a shortcut to solve the problem How can you use a grid to find the product 23 x 90? Could we split one of the factors? Which factor should we split to make the problem easier??? Why would splitting 23 make the problem easier? It would make our problem easier, because 90 is already a multiple of 10 and now we also have 20 which is a multiple of 10. Work with your shoulder partner to find the two partial products. 20 x 90 = 1,800 and 90 x 3 = 270 Add partial products together: 1, = 203 1, , 070

Guided Practice Work with your shoulder partner to solve the above problems. Then, discuss your results with the class.
