Inequalities SPI Given a set of values, identify those that make an inequality a true statement. GLE Solve single- step linear equations and inequalities.

I'm saving $2 per week of my allowance to buy a video game that costs $ How many weeks will it take me to get enough money? # of weeks total amount saved 1 $2

Continue Chart here if necessary # of weeks total amount saved

Questions to ponder: Do you notice a pattern? How many weeks will I have to save up in order to have enough money to buy the video game that is $27.89 ? Can you write a number sentence showing the relationship between the number of weeks and the total amount saved? The # in the 2nd column is 2 times the # in the 1st column Any number more than 13 will work. > 2 x > $27.89 This is called an inequality

What is an Inequality ? An inequality says that two values are not equal. a ≠ b says that a is not equal to b There are other special symbols that show in what way things are not equal. a b says that a is greater than b a ≤ b means that a is less than or equal to b a ≥ b means that a is greater than or equal to b.

Inequalities <>  less than fewer than greater than more than exceeds less than or equal to no more than at most greater than or equal to no less than at least Inequality symbols

Inequalities Example For the given value, state whether each inequality is true or false. x – 7 > 16 If x = 15

Inequalities Example For the given value, state whether each inequality is true or false. a.x – 7 > 16, x = – 7 > 16 8 > 16 This sentence is false.

Practice writing inequalities In your spiral, try to write the following inequalities correctly. Example: 5 is less than or equal to x would look like: 5 < x

Get ready…set…. GO !

1.17 is greater than y 2.r is not equal to p 3. 8 is less than or equal to w

Check your answers 1.17 is greater than y 2.r is not equal to p 3. 8 is less than or equal to w 17 > y r ≠ p 8 ≤ w

4.t is greater than or equal to is equal to g 6.h is greater than e 7.15 is not equal to c

Check your answers 4.t is greater than or equal to is equal to g 6.h is greater than e 7.15 is not equal to c t ≥ 25 9 = g h > e 15 ≠ c

For Homework: Come up with 5 word phrases (like we did for practice) and do the following: 1)Write your 5 word phrases- skipping one line between each phrase 2)Write the answers to your word phrases on the back (with the corresponding #) Example- I’d write this on the front: 1) 15 is not equal to c I’d write this on the back of my paper: 1) 15 ≠ c

Whoever follows the directions and completes the homework will get to participate in a fun activity tomorrow That Quiz Practice with Inequalities If you have time
