USING TECHNOLOGY TO MEET COMMON CORE STANDARDS Common Core and Technology

Common Core State Standards Overview  Standards for students to reach college and to be career ready  Build on strengths and lessons of current state standards  Key goals: coherent, clearer, fewer, higher, measurable and internationally benchmarked standards

Common Core Standards To give students the knowledge and skills they will need to succeed in a rapidly changing world Deeper learning = Content mastery + 21st century skills  Critical thinking  Problem solving  Collaboration  Communication  Real-world application  Self-directed learning

Common Core + Deeper Learning “Rigorous: The standards will include high-level cognitive demands by asking students to demonstrate deep conceptual understanding through the application of content knowledge and skills to new situations. High-level cognitive demand includes reasoning, justification, synthesis, analysis, and problem- solving.” - Common Core State Standards Initiative Standards-Setting Criteria

Organization for Deeper Learning  English Language Arts (ELA) Designed as a “staircase” Anchor standards in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language Media and literacy throughout Increased focus on Informational text Informative/explanatory writing Domain specific vocabulary

Coherent Organization for Deeper Learning  Math  Standards for Mathematical Practice »Consistent across all grade levels »Describe mathematical habits of mind  Standards for Mathematical Content »Organized in domains that progress over several grades »High school standards presented by conceptual theme

Common Core State Standards DO NOT DEFINE:  Curriculum  How teachers are to teach DO CREATE:  Need for curriculum materials  Need for teacher professional development  Opportunity for OER materials to meet these needs

Common Core Standards By 2013–2014 School Year- Implementation of the NMCCSS begins in grades mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA) Implementation of the NMCCSS literacy standards begins in grades 6-12 social studies/history, science, and technical subjects

Mathematics Standard 5. Use appropriate tools strategically. Mathematically proficient students consider the available tools when solving a mathematical problem… a spreadsheet, a computer algebra system, a statistical package, or dynamic geometry software. Mathematically proficient students…are able to identify relevant external mathematical resources…and are able to use technological tools to explore and deepen their understanding of concepts.

Mathematics To be ready for…life in a technological society, students need the ability to gather, comprehend, evaluate, synthesize, and report on information and ideas Conduct research and to produce and consume media is embedded into every aspect of today’s curriculum. In like fashion, research and media skills and understandings are embedded throughout the Standards rather than treated in a separate section (emphasis added).

English Language Arts Use technology and digital media strategically and capably.  Students employ technology to enhance their reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language use.  They tailor their searches online to acquire useful information efficiently, and they integrate what they learn using technology with what they learn offline.  They are familiar with the strengths and limitations of various technological tools and mediums and can select and use those best suited to their communication goals.

English Language Arts Reading: 7. Integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse media and formats, including visually and quantitatively, as well as in words. Writing: 6. Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and to interact and collaborate with others. Writing: 8. Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, assess the credibility and accuracy of each source, and integrate the information while avoiding plagiarism.

English Language Arts Speaking & Listening:  2. Integrate and evaluate information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally.  5. Make strategic use of digital media and visual displays of data to express information and enhance understanding of presentations.  New technologies have broadened and expanded the role that speaking and listening play in… content and changing combinations of words, graphics, images, hyperlinks, and embedded video and audio.

English Language Arts Story Bee  Listen to professional storytellers - Podcasts for all grade levels International Children's Digital Library  Collection of books that represents outstanding historical and contemporary books Storyline  Collection of videos of people reading stories. Each book includes activities and lesson ideas

English Language Arts TeenTribune, TweenTribune and TTEspañol  Daily news sites for teens and "tweens". News articles are posted and students can blog on their chosen story. For students aged 8-18 Little Bird Tales  Free site that allows teachers and students to create and publish their own digital tales

Content/Assignment Creation WikiSpaces  Space on the Web where you can share work and ideas, pictures and links, videos and media- Educational Accounts SAS Curriculum Pathways  Audio, visual, and interactive components to reinforce the educational objectives set by teachers in content areas

Content/Assignment Creation Wordle  Generate “word clouds” from text that you provide Animoto  Turn photos, video clips, and music into video Flash Card Machine  Create web-based study flashcards that can be shared with others

Mathematics General Purpose Tools  Tools to solve algebra, geometry, and trigonometry problems, simulations, and data analysis Custom Apps  Apps for algebra, stats, and geometry suggested to use by NCTM Sample Lessons using Math Tools  Problem-based lessons that employ Core Math Tools

Mathematics Math Common Core Coalition  Provides expertise and advice on issues related to the effective implementation of the Common Core State Standards for School Mathematics (CCSSM) OER and Common Core  Free, aligned resources for meeting Common Core National Council of Teachers of Mathematics  Community of mathematics educators

Mathematics Illustrative Mathematics  Provides guidance to states, assessment consortia, testing companies, and curriculum developers by illustrating the range and types of mathematical work that students experience in implementation of the Common Core State Standards, and by publishing other tools that support implementation of the standards.

Career Skills, Mathematics and ELA Technology Integration Matrix  The Technology Integration Matrix (TIM) illustrates how teachers can use technology to enhance learning for K-12 students.
