THE CHALLENGES WE FACE PARTNERSHIPS COMMISSIONING INTENTIONS

THE CHALLENGES WE FACE CHANGING AND RISING EXPECTATIONS FINANCIAL AND WORKFORCE CONSTRAINTS DEMOGRAPHIC CHALLENGES

Table 1 Increase in older population by district

We have modelled the potential impact of these demographic changes against the current pattern of care. If the numbers of older people in care homes were to continue to be in the same proportion as we do now then: by 2010 an extra 357 older people would be resident in care homes by 2015 this would rise to an extra 1488, and by 2025 an extra 4843 older people would be resident in care homes THE CURRENT PATTERN OF CARE FOR OLDER PEOPLE IS THEREFORE SIMPLY UNSUSTAINABLE. IT WILL NOT DELIVER WHAT PEOPLE WILL WANT IN THE FUTURE AND WOULD MEAN EVEN MORE OLDER PEOPLE LIVING IN CARE HOMES, AND THIS IS NOT AFFORDABLE.
