 Scientific Method  Steps of Scientific Method  Steps scientists use when they study something  Observation, Questioning, Hypothesis, Experiment, Results, Conclusion

 Observation Two types: *Qualitative  “l” for “look” : Qualities (characteristics) smell, look, hear, touch, taste *Quantitative  “n” for “number”: measurements: scales, ruler, balance

Question  Develop a question or problem that can be solved through experimentation. * Not all questions are scientific. Ex: personal opinion, values, or judgments.

 Predict a possible testable answer to the problem or question.  If... Then statement  Must be measurable * Example: If soil temperatures rise, then plant growth will increase. Hypothesis

 Develop and follow a procedure. (step by step how to do an experiment)  Include tables, graphs, and photographs Experiment Result

 A Conclusion is a statement based on the results of the experiment  Include a statement that accepts or rejects the hypothesis and why.  Also recommend possible improvements to the procedure. Conclusion
